Pumpkin Week

Some of our fun pumpkin activities.

Painting pumpkins - The kids put yellow and red paint on their paper and painted a pumpkin shape.  Later they cut it out and added faces.  So cute!

Sink or float?  Eleven of the kids thought the heavy pumpkin would sink; 4 thought it would float.  I set the pumpkin in the empty container and added the first bucket of water.  The pumpkin continued to sit on the bottom.  I added the second bucket and it still sat.  The "sink"-ers were getting pretty excited at this point.  On the third bucket of water the pumpkin seemed to move a little bit and it gave the "float"-ers some hope.  After adding the fourth bucket it was definitely floating.  The kids were so excited, I don't think they even cared if they got it right or not!

Before we did the sink/float experiment, we did a measuring experiment.   I had the kids cut a string that they thought was the same length as the circumference of the pumpkin, then we measured.  Eight of the strings were too short, 4 of them were too long and 3 of them were so close the kids felt like they needed to be called "just right".  Jason's string was exactly right!  Sorry, no pictures of this experiment.

During reading we played a sight word game on the Smart board.  The kids could read any word they wanted and if they got it correct, they touched it to reveal a number.  That's how many pumpkin-shaped pretzels they got.  One sight word was the "Bonus" word.  If they correctly read the word and revealed "bonus" they got a whole package of pretzels.  Millie was our lucky bonus winner!

For our finale we had a tasting party!  The kids tasted pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie and pumpkin ice cream then we graphed what their favorite was.  Can you guess???  Most of them thought the cookie was good, that the pie was nasty, and the ice cream was wonderful!  We did have several that liked the cookies best, a couple that liked the pie best, but most of them chose the ice cream.
